What readers say

Readers come to these books for the ideas and stay for the sentences they can finally follow. This is a sample of what they’ve told us.

The words and beautiful prayers of Henry Scougal and also Thomas Watson have served to help me to draw nearer to the Lord. In the following excerpt from Henry Scougal's book he wrote: ... true religion is a connection between the soul and God, a real sharing of the divine essence, a reflection of God in the soul, or, as the apostle said, "It is Christ formed within us." There is nothing more important to me and I love how the author encourages prayer and meditation. I will not rest and with God's help will persevere until I know Christ is formed in me!

Edwards classic book is an important read for everyone interested in the theology of God and His sovereignty and providence. The original work by Edward is great, but long sentences and wordy language by Edward make the original work a tough read for many. The Updated Text in this book breaks down most sentences and sections. It gives great insight by updating terms for the 21st century and makes this book available and readable to each reader. The updated Version is terrific!

Anyone who has any interest in the Westminster Catechism.

It tends to be quite solid reading, and it causes me to constantly take a close look at my life and ask myself "Is my Christian walk what it should be"?

Very worthwhile reading / studying, especially if you want to grow closer to the person Christ wants you to be.

Rarely if ever have I seen a work of such clear and practical intent with a stepwise systematic and methodical method of presentation that has such a clear and frequent basis in scripture. Almost every sentence. They only author I've experienced who can express himself in this manner is John Bunyan.

These are the sort of sermons we, as growing Christians, need to hear. But not only do we need to hear them, we need to look closely at our life and ask ourselves, "Is what he's saying relevant to me right now"? And if it is relevant, what are we going to do about it?

I read just a short passage as a devotional for the day in a collection of Puritan writings, and that was enough for 5 stars. Thank you for making the complete work available. God bless.

A book that needs to be read by every believer. Calvin gives a wonderful and tender view of the Christian life for believers who have God's grace and mercy flooding the soul.

I teach Pastoral care and counseling in Central Asia and this book brings to live the vision, the soul and several parables about the care and shepherding of the church. Unfortunately the English Bible translates "Shepherd" correctly in every NT place except in Ephesians 4 where we like to use the word "pastor" But the real meaning is to be a shepherd of the soul and this classic book gives great understanding and meaning to the Shepherd of the flock. Dear pastor, read it and love the meanings and insights!

I first read this in Richard Steele's original English - Old English (KJV style). I am so delighted to see this now available in modern English. This book is exceptional in its current value in an age of information overload and at a time of endless distraction. How can anyone expect the benefits of sitting under the preaching and teaching of the Word, when attention drifts constantly. It takes a great deal of self-discipline to receive the discipline of the Word as a means of grace.

They do a really good job at not "missing the point" or "watering down" main theological themes from their modernization. Perhaps some sentences won't "hit as hard", because that's the nature of these things... it's not EXACTLY what the author wrote. However, these Updated Works publications are one of the best introductions to these classic Puritan Works there is.

This book provides an excellent pastoral, systematic unpacking of the doctrines of the Christian faith as found in the first part of the Westminster Catechism. I would recommend it for anyone who is looking to have their hearts warmed while also their theology sharpened and clarified according to God's Word.

I so wish we had a local preacher who would share God's Word like this. I realise times change and technology has now forced it's way into "the church", but when I read books like this, I suddenly become aware of how much we are missing by being fed 10 minuet "feel good" sermons.
