About Updated Works

Making timeless wisdom accessible

We believe the best ideas don't belong to one era. Our mission is to unlock the wisdom of history's greatest thinkers for modern readers.

Why we exist

Some of the most important ideas in history are locked away in old books that modern readers struggle to understand. Archaic language, unfamiliar phrasing, and outdated conventions create unnecessary barriers to timeless wisdom.

Updated Works exists to change that. We take significant older texts and translate them into clear, contemporary English while faithfully preserving the author's original meaning and voice. Our goal is simple: make important books readable again.

We're building a growing catalog spanning the Puritans, the Reformers, the early church fathers, and the great voices of philosophy and history — each edition carefully rendered into clear modern English. Browse by author or collection to find the ideas and voices that shaped the world we live in.

Collections we're building

Early Church

Writings from the Church Fathers who shaped Christian thought in the first centuries after Christ.

Reformation

Key texts from the Protestant Reformation that transformed Western Christianity and culture.

Puritan

Classic Puritan works on theology, devotion, and practical Christian living.

Philosophy

Foundational philosophical texts that have shaped Western thought and inquiry.

American History

Founding documents, speeches, and writings that shaped the American nation.

And more

We're interested in any older work of significance. Great ideas deserve to be accessible.

How we modernize every book

Every edition passes through the same disciplined process — built to make a centuries-old text read naturally today without bending a word of what its author actually said.

Faithful to the original · Clear for today · Verified at every step

1

Sourcing & digitization

We work from the original printed editions — some dating to the 1600s — and digitize them at high resolution. Every page is captured in full, including the typographic quirks of early print, and checked to confirm that no text is lost along the way.

2

Modernization

Archaic spelling, obsolete words, and tangled sentence structure are rendered into clear, contemporary English — always preserving the author's meaning, voice, and line of argument. We modernize the language, never the message.

3

Line-by-line verification

Every modernized passage is checked back against the original to confirm that nothing has been added, dropped, or subtly shifted in meaning. Once approved, that wording is final — everything after is formatting, never rewriting.

4

Scripture, independently verified

Scripture receives a dedicated verification pass. We independently confirm two things for every Bible passage: that it remains unchanged from the original text we're modernizing, and that the quotation itself is accurate. References and the author's numbered points are matched to the source as well, so citations and the structure of the argument stay intact.

5

Careful handling of hard passages

Where a passage calls for judgment — an ambiguous phrase, a scripture reference, anything where meaning is at stake — it's flagged for extra scrutiny and resolved against the original rather than smoothed over. Nothing is changed silently.

6

Professional editions

Finally, each book is typeset into a clean paperback, alongside ebook and PDF editions, so it reads beautifully in print or on any device.
