Why the scans needed work

The same page, as scanned and as restored

The Readers are public domain, and the copies most families print are scans of old paper: brown, faded, and soft at the edges. The pronunciation marks above the vowels are often unreadable, and those marks are how the early lessons teach sounds. Below is page 49 of the Fourth Reader from the archive scan, and the same page from the restored edition.

The same page 49, restored: black type on white, the engraving sharp, the running head and page number preserved

The work

What was done

These are not modernized editions. The words, lessons, and page order are the 1879 Revised Edition as printed. Only the paper changed.

  • 01

    Pronunciation marks kept

The marks that show a vowel’s sound (ă, ā, ĭ, ī, ŏ, ō) are reproduced on every word list as printed.

  • 02

    Engravings cleaned

The wood engravings were lifted from the scan, cleared of foxing and bleed-through, and sharpened to their original line.

  • 03

    Formatted for printing

Black on white on a 6 × 9 inch page, with the original page numbers and running heads.

  • 04

    Compared against the source

Each page was checked against the scan for dropped words, wrong marks, and missing lines before it was included.

Questions

About the Readers

What are McGuffey’s Readers?

A graded series of seven schoolbooks (a Primer and six Readers) first compiled by William Holmes McGuffey in 1836 and revised in 1879. The early books teach reading by sound; the later ones are anthologies of prose and poetry for reading aloud. An estimated 120 million copies were sold between 1836 and 1960. The 1879 Revised Edition is the one most homeschool families use.

What does “restored” mean here?

The public-domain scans are yellowed, faded, and blurry, and the small pronunciation marks above the vowels are often unreadable. Each page was rebuilt from the original: black type on white, the marks reproduced exactly, the engravings cleaned. Nothing was modernized, abridged, or rewritten. The words, lessons, and page order are the 1879 Revised Edition as printed.

Are the downloads free?

Yes. The Readers are in the public domain, and the restored PDFs are free to download, print, and share for personal and classroom use. Enter your email on the download page and a download link is sent to you.

Can I print these?

Yes. Every book is set on a 6 × 9 inch page, so it prints cleanly at home or through a print-on-demand service.

Which reader should my child start with?

The Primer is for a child who is learning letters and sounds. The First Reader is for a beginning reader who knows the alphabet. After that, move up one book when the current one is easy to read aloud. The grade levels on this page are a guide, not a rule.
