About this reader
What’s inside
The First Reader continues from the Primer. Each lesson begins with a list of new words, marked for pronunciation, followed by a short passage that uses only words the child has already met. The pronunciation marks are the main reason families use this edition, and they were the first thing lost in the old scans. Every mark and every engraving has been rebuilt from the original.
- Sixty-two graded lessons with marked word lists
- McGuffey's own Suggestions to Teachers on the phonic, word, and combined methods
- The script alphabet and script figures
- Fifty-eight wood engravings, cleaned and sharpened
