Biography

Juan Luis Vives was a Valencian humanist and one of the leading scholars of the northern Renaissance. Born in 1493, he studied in Paris and taught at Louvain, where he became a friend of Erasmus and Thomas More. He came to England in 1523 under the patronage of Henry VIII, served as tutor to Princess Mary, and lectured at Oxford. He lost favor over the king's divorce and settled in Bruges, where he died in 1540. His writings on education, on psychology in De Anima et Vita, and on the relief of the poor were widely read across Europe.
