About The Book of Hebrew Names

The Book of Hebrew Names is an etymological glossary of proper names found in the Old and New Testaments, arranged alphabetically within the order of the biblical books. In his preface Jerome explains that Philo, working from earlier Jewish tradition, had compiled such a list of Hebrew names for the Greeks, a project later taken up by Origen, but that the copies circulating in his own day were corrupt and disordered. At the urging of two otherwise unknown correspondents, Lupulianus and Valerianus, and confident in his own knowledge of Hebrew, Jerome undertook to revise and complete the work, proceeding book by book from Genesis through the Pauline epistles and Revelation, and extending it to the New Testament, which Philo, as a Jew, had not covered. He notes that some names are reserved for treatment in his companion works, the Hebrew Questions and the Book of Places. The entries give brief, sometimes multiple, proposed meanings for each name, reflecting the etymological method of ancient onomastic scholarship. The work dates to around 390 AD.

By Jerome. Collected in Patrologia Latina, Volume 23.

Preface — Preface: Origin and Purpose of the Work

Philo, a most eloquent man among the Jews, is also confirmed by the testimony of Origen to have published a book of Hebrew Names, and to have set forth their etymologies side by side, in order according to the letters. Since this book is commonly held among the Greeks, and has filled the libraries of the world, it was my endeavor to translate it into the Latin tongue. But I found the copies so discordant among themselves, and the order so confused, that I judged it better to keep silent than to write something worthy of censure. And so, at the urging of the brothers Lupulianus and Valerianus, who think that I have made some progress in the knowledge of the Hebrew language, and moved also by the usefulness of the thing itself, I went through the individual books in the order of the Scriptures; and, restoring the old building with new care, I think I have accomplished something that even the Greeks ought to seek after.

Moreover, I also give this warning in the Preface: that if certain things have here been omitted, the reader should know they are reserved for another work. For I now have in hand the Books of Hebrew Questions, a new work, and one unheard of hitherto among both Greeks and Latins alike. Not that I insolently extol my own zeal, but, being conscious of my labor, I would call to the reading of them those who do not yet know of it. If anyone, then, wishes to have both those and the present volume, as well as the Book of Places, which I am about to publish, he will set at nought the grimace and disdain of the Jews. And lest, perchance, when the building was finished, the final touch should seem to be lacking, I have interpreted the words and names of the New Testament also: wishing in part to imitate Origen, whom none but the ignorant will deny to be, after the Apostles, a teacher of the Churches.

For among the other illustrious monuments of his genius, he labored also at this, that what Philo, as a Jew, had omitted, he, as a Christian, might fulfill.

It must not at once be supposed that wherever names are set down beginning with the letter A (א), which among the Hebrews is called ALEPH (אלף), it is that letter alone which is being used. For sometimes they take their beginning from AIN (ע), often from HE (ה), and sometimes from the letters HETH (ח), which change their aspirations and sounds. It must therefore be known that, both in Genesis and in the other books, where a name begins in Hebrew with a vowel letter, it may, as we said above, begin from different elements among the Hebrews. But because among us there is not so great a diversity of sounds, we are content with a simple utterance. Whence it happens that the same words, which among them are not written alike, seem to us to vary in the interpretation.

That which we said at the beginning should be observed in the vowel letters—namely that with us at times there is one letter, while among the Hebrews it is pronounced with various sounds—must now also be known regarding the letter S. For among the Hebrews there are three letters S: one which is called SAMECH (ס), ס, and is read simply, as if written with our own letter S; another, SIN (ש), ש, in which a certain hissing sound rings out that does not belong to our speech; a third, SADE (צ), צ, which our ears utterly shrink from. So wherever it happens that the same names are interpreted differently in different places, the cause is that they are written with different letters. And what we have said concerning Genesis in this matter is to be observed likewise in all the books.

Sephion, the mouth of sorrow went forth. Soni, my pupil, or my second. Sare (שרה), malicious, or hissing. Syria (ארם), lofty, or moist. Staulam, rooted.
