About Lexicon of Hebrew Names

This lexicon is an alphabetical glossary of Hebrew proper names drawn from both the Old and New Testaments, each followed by one or more proposed Latin interpretations of its meaning. Entries range from major figures such as Adam, Abraham, Moses, and Jesus to minor persons, peoples, and place names scattered through the biblical narrative, along with a handful of Aramaic, Persian, and Greek terms encountered in the text. Many names receive multiple competing glosses, reflecting the uncertain etymological methods of ancient onomastic scholarship, which worked from the sound and apparent roots of Hebrew words rather than systematic philology. It is printed in Migne's Patrologia Latina among the appendices to Jerome's works and traditionally carries Origen's name, but the ascription to Origen is doubtful and cannot be confirmed; the compiler and precise date are unknown. The lexicon belongs to a broader late antique and early medieval tradition of onomastic reference works, closely related to Jerome's own better-known interpretation of Hebrew names, and served readers seeking to unpack the symbolic meanings of biblical names encountered in scripture and commentary.

By Origen. Collected in Patrologia Latina, Volume 23.
