About Fragments on the Interpretation of Hebrew Names

This appendix gathers five fragmentary glossaries interpreting Hebrew proper names found throughout the Bible, traditionally attributed to Eusebius of Caesarea though the ascription is uncertain and the material was printed alongside Jerome's onomastic writings. The first and second fragments run through patriarchs, tribes, place names, prophets, angels, and the twelve apostles, giving a short etymological gloss for each, such as Adam as "earth-born" and Peter as "one who loosens." A separate section treats names occurring in the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John individually. The third fragment expands genealogical lists, working through the sons of Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun name by name. The fourth and fifth fragments continue with names arranged loosely by subject and then alphabetically, including feminine names, masculine names, and terms transliterated from Aramaic such as Talitha cumi and Raca. The whole belongs to the tradition of Hebrew name interpretation that also produced Jerome's own Liber Interpretationis Hebraicorum Nominum.

By Eusebius of Caesarea. Collected in Patrologia Latina, Volume 23.
