About Words Spoken at the Council of Aquileia
Dicta in Concilio Aquileiensi (Words Spoken at the Council of Aquileia) preserves two brief exchanges between the Arian bishop Palladius of Ratiaria and Chromatius, then a presbyter of Aquileia, recorded during the council held there in 381 AD under Ambrose of Milan. When Palladius asks whether his treatise should be read out in full, Chromatius answers that Palladius has denied not merely a creature but one who is powerful, and with him all that the catholic faith professes. In a second exchange, Chromatius insists that the sacerdotal condemnation of Palladius stand, and that Palladius's own writings now likewise be read in full.
By Chromatius of Aquileia. Collected in Patrologia Latina, Volume 20.
Palladius said: Do you now wish the treatise to be read in full, or not? CHROMATIUS the presbyter said: You have not denied a creature, you have denied one who is powerful. You have denied all things which the catholic faith professes.
Palladius said: Let the hearers come. CHROMATIUS the presbyter said: With the sacerdotal condemnation kept intact; nay rather, let even those things which are Palladius's now also be read in full.
