About Exorcism
Exorcismus is a rite of exorcism transmitted under Ambrose's name among the appended works in Migne's edition. It opens with a prayer to Christ for strength to confront "this cruel dragon," then adjures the unclean spirit directly by the power of Christ's own victory over Satan after his baptism in the Jordan. The exorcist recalls the devil's defeats throughout scripture - in Job, in Pharaoh's drowned army, in Bel overthrown through Daniel, in Saul's tormenting spirit put to flight by David, in Judas's betrayal, and in Simon Magus, Ananias and Sapphira, Herod, and the magician blinded by Paul - commanding the spirit's departure before the fire of judgment. Amen closes the formula.
By Ambrose of Milan. Collected in Patrologia Latina, Volume 17.
Almighty Lord, Word of God the Father, Christ Jesus, God and Lord of all creation, who gave to your holy apostles power to tread upon serpents and scorpions: who among the other precepts of your wonders deigned to say, Cast out devils; by whose power Satan, conquered, fell like lightning from heaven: I beseech your name with fear and trembling as a suppliant, that, all my sins being forgiven, unworthy as I am, it may deign to grant me confidence and ability, so that, fortified by the power of your arm, I may faithfully and securely attack this cruel dragon.
I adjure you therefore, every most unclean spirit, every phantasm, every incursion of Satan, in the power of the name of Christ, who after the washing of the Jordan was led into the desert, and conquered you in your own dwelling places; that you may cease to assail him whom he formed from the slime of the earth unto the honor of his glory, and may tremble before the image of Almighty God in this wretched man, not before mere human frailty. Yield therefore to God, who reduced you to servitude in his humbled servant Job: yield to God, who through Moses his servant sank you and your host in Pharaoh and his army into the abyss: yield to God, who through Daniel his boy destroyed you in Bel, and cast you down in the dragon: yield to God, who through his most faithful David put you to flight from King Saul by spiritual songs: yield to God, who condemned you in Judas the betrayer.
For he now drives you with divine scourges, in whose sight, trembling with your legions, you once cried out: What have we to do with you, Jesus, son of David? Have you come before the time to torment us? He presses you with everlasting flames, who at the end of time will say to the impious: Depart, cursed ones, into everlasting fire, which my Father prepared for the devil and his angels. For you, impious one, and for your angels the worm that never dies is prepared: for you and your angels the unquenchable fire is prepared; because you are, accursed one, the prince of murder, the author of incest, the head of the sacrilegious, the teacher of the worst arts, the doctor of heretics, the inventor of all obscenity. Depart therefore, impious one, depart, wicked one, depart with all your deceit; for God has willed that man be his temple. But why do you delay any longer?
Give honor to God the Father almighty, to whom every knee bows: give place to Christ Jesus, who poured out his blood for man: give place to the Holy Spirit, who through his blessed apostle Peter revealed you in Simon, who condemned your deceit in Ananias and Sapphira, who struck you down in King Herod when he gave not honor to God, who through his apostle Paul poured the darkness of blindness upon you in that most wicked magician, and through the same apostle, commanding by word, ordered you to go out of the python-spirit woman. Depart therefore now, depart, seducer; for the desert is your seat, the serpent is your dwelling. Be humbled, be cast down: it is no longer a time for delay. For behold, the ruling Lord draws near, soon fire shall burn before him, and shall inflame his enemies round about. For though you may deceive man, you cannot mock the Lord.
He casts you out, from whose eyes nothing is hidden: he expels you, to whose power all things are subject: he shuts you out, who has prepared eternal hell for you and your angels, from whose mouth shall come forth a two-edged sword, who is to come in the Holy Spirit to judge the world by fire. Amen.
