About The Bordeaux Pilgrim's Itinerary

The Bordeaux Pilgrim's Itinerary is the earliest surviving Christian pilgrimage account, recording a journey made in 333 AD from Bordeaux across Gaul, over the Alps, and through the Balkans to Constantinople, then on through Asia Minor and Syria to Jerusalem, with the return route traced through Macedonia and Italy to Rome and Milan. Its core is a bare list of posting-stations, lodging-places, and mileages, but at Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the surrounding countryside the anonymous traveler pauses to note the holy sites shown to visitors - the pools by the temple, Golgotha, the Mount of Olives, the tombs of the patriarchs at Hebron - including several churches recorded as newly built by order of the Emperor Constantine. Scattered notices also mark places tied to figures such as Paul, Elijah, and Alexander the Great. It stands as the oldest detailed guide to the holy places of the Roman East.

There is Mount Agazaren. There the Samaritans say Abraham offered sacrifice, and one ascends to the very summit of the mountain by 300 steps.

From there, at the foot of that same mountain, is a place whose name is Shechem. There is set the monument where Joseph was placed in the estate which Jacob his father gave to him. From there Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, was carried off by the sons of the Amorites.

From there, a thousand paces away, is a place whose name is Sychar, from which the Samaritan woman came down to that same place where Jacob dug a well to draw water from it, and our Lord Jesus Christ spoke with her. There are plane trees which Jacob planted, and a bath which is supplied from that well.

From there, 28 miles, going toward Jerusalem, on the left side is the estate which is called Bethar. From there, a thousand paces away, is the place where Jacob, as he was going into Mesopotamia, fell asleep, and there is an almond tree, and he saw a vision, and an Angel wrestled with him. There was King Jeroboam, to whom a prophet was sent that he might turn to God most high; and the prophet had been commanded not to eat with the false prophet whom the king kept with him. And because he was led astray by the false prophet and ate with him, a lion met the prophet on his return journey, and the lion slew him.

From there to Jerusalem, 12 miles. From Caesarea Palestinae to Jerusalem is 116 miles, 4 lodging-places, 4 waystations.

In Jerusalem there are two large pools beside the temple, one on the right and one on the left, which Solomon made. But within the city there are twin pools having five porticoes, which are called Bethsaida. There the sick of many years were healed. Those pools have water turbid after the manner of crimson. There is also a crypt where Solomon used to torment demons. There is the pinnacle of the very lofty tower where the Lord ascended, and he who was tempting him said to him.

And the Lord said to him:

Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God, but him alone shalt thou serve.

There also is a great cornerstone, of which it was said:

The stone which the builders rejected.

Likewise at the head of the corner, and beneath the pinnacle of the tower, are very many chambers where Solomon had his palace.

There is also established the chamber in which he sat and wrote down his wisdom;

and it is roofed with a single stone.

There are also large underground cisterns of water, and pools built with great labour, and in the very shrine where the temple was which Solomon built, in the marble before the altar, you would say the blood of Zacharias was shed there this very day.

The footprints of the soldiers who slew him are likewise visible across the whole pavement, so that you would think them fixed in wax. There are also two statues of Hadrian. And not far from the statues is a perforated stone, to which the Jews come every year, and anoint it, and lament with groaning, and rend their garments, and so depart. There is also the house of Hezekiah, king of Judah. Likewise, going out of Jerusalem to ascend Sion, on the left side, and below in the valley beside the wall, is the pool which is called Siloam; it has a four-sided portico; and another pool, a large one, outside. This spring runs for six days and nights. From there one ascends Sion, and there is visible the place where was the house of Caiaphas the priest, and a column is still there at which they flogged Christ with scourges. But within the wall of Sion the place is visible where David had his palace, and seven synagogues which were there; only one has remained, but the rest are ploughed and sown; as Isaiah the prophet said. From there, going outside the wall of Sion toward the Neapolitan gate, on the right side, below in the valley, are walls where was the house or praetorium of Pontius Pilate. There the Lord was heard before he suffered. On the left side, however, is the little hill of Golgotha, where the Lord was crucified. From there, about a stone's throw away, is the crypt where his body was laid, and on the third day he rose again. In that same place a basilica has now been built by order of the Emperor Constantine, that is, a Dominicum of wondrous beauty, having on its side cisterns where water is drawn, and a bath at the rear where infants are washed. Likewise, going from Jerusalem toward the gate which faces the East, to ascend the Mount of Olives, the valley which is called Josaphat is on the left side, where there are vineyards. There is also the rock where Judas Iscariot betrayed Christ. On the right side, however, is a palm tree from which the children took branches and strewed them when Christ came. From there, not far away, about a stone's throw, are two notable monuments of wondrous beauty made. In one is placed Isaiah the prophet, which is truly monolithic, and in the other Hezekiah king of the Jews. From there you ascend the Mount of Olives where the Lord taught the apostles before the Passion. There a basilica has been built by order of Constantine. From there, not far away, is the little hill where the Lord went up to pray, and there Moses and Elijah appeared, when he took Peter and John with him. From there, to the east, fifteen hundred paces away, is the estate which is called Bethany. There is the crypt where Lazarus was laid, whom the Lord raised up.

Likewise from Jerusalem to Jericho, 18 miles. Descending the mountain on the right side, behind the monument, is a sycamore tree into which Zacchaeus climbed to see Christ. Fifteen hundred paces from the city is the spring of Elisha the prophet; formerly if any woman drank of that water, she did not bear children. Beside it is the earthen vessel of Elisha; he put salt in it, and came and stood over the spring, and said: Thus saith the Lord: I have healed these waters; henceforth if any woman drink thereof, she shall bear children. Above that same spring is the house of Rahab the harlot, into which the spies entered, and she hid them when Jericho was overthrown and she alone escaped. There was the city of Jericho whose walls the children of Israel encircled with the ark of the Covenant, and the walls fell. Of it nothing is visible now except the place where the ark of the Covenant was, and the 12 stones which the children of Israel lifted from the Jordan. In that same place Joshua the son of Nun circumcised the children of Israel, and buried their foreskins.

Likewise from Jericho to the Dead Sea, 8 miles. Its water is exceedingly bitter, where there is no fish of any kind whatsoever, nor any vessel, and if any man cast himself in to swim, the water itself turns him over.

From there to the Jordan where the Lord was baptized by John, 5 miles.

There is a place above the river, a little hill on that bank, where Elijah was taken up into heaven. Likewise, going from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, four miles, above the road on the right side, is the monument where Rachel, the wife of Jacob, was laid. From there, two miles, on the left side, is Bethlehem, where our Lord Jesus Christ was born; there a basilica has been built by order of Constantine. From there, not far away, is the monument of Ezekiel, Asaph, Sobbe, and Jesse, David, Solomon, and it has in that crypt on the side, going down, the above-written names inscribed in Hebrew.

From there to Bethzachora, 14 miles.

Where is the spring at which Philip baptized the Eunuch.

From there to Terebinthus, 9 miles.

Where Abraham dwelt, and dug a well under the terebinth tree, and spoke with the angels, and took food. There a basilica of wondrous beauty has been built by order of Constantine.
