About The Roman Council in the Case of Dionysius of Alexandria

This short notice, preserved among the fragments relating to Dionysius of Alexandria in Migne's Patrologia Latina, records two provincial synods that Dionysius convened at Alexandria in the mid-third century. The first condemned the teaching of Sabellius, who denied a real distinction among the persons of the Trinity. The second, held after Sabellius's death, condemned Nepos, a bishop in Egypt, together with Cerinthus, for teaching that the kingdom of Christ would be established for a thousand years in an earthly Jerusalem, complete with animal sacrifice. The notice briefly documents the doctrinal controversies that occupied Dionysius during his episcopate and drew the attention of the church at Rome.

By Council of Rome. Collected in Patrologia Latina, Volume 5.

The divine and holy particular synod, gathered at Alexandria by the confessor Dionysius, its archbishop: which rejected Sabellius, the enemy of the divinity. The divine and holy provincial synod, gathered at Alexandria by the same Dionysius: which condemned, and after death rejected Nepotianus, bishop of Egypt, and Cerinthus: as men asserting, and drawing very many others into that error, that the kingdom of Christ is in an earthly Jerusalem, and teaching the millennium of years: and moreover demanding sacrifices of oxen and slaughterings of sheep as lawful observances.
